[He's rehearsed this but every way he tried sounded awkward anyway so he just - goes with it.]

[When he finally replies, Sam's coloring is a couple of shades paler than usual and he looks like he hasn't slept since they last spoke]

Sorry I - didn't ditch you or anything it's just been...crazy.

I don't know, but I gotta learn some way to control - whatever it is I've got.

[When a conversation is left open-ended like that, the forge tends to pick it up automatically on whatever setting was used for it last. Thus it turns on in video before Lupin can set to voice.

So Sam is the only person to have seen Lupin's face over a forge in the last few days. Why is obvious: Lupin's face, always scarred, is now covered in fresher wounds, both bruises and cuts. The injuries extend until they're blocked by the collar of his shirt. If his hands come into view, they suggest a uniformity of batteredness.

This is not exactly how Lupin would like anyone to see him, but particularly not someone asking for help learning self-control. How on earth can I be trusted to teach anybody else…

Well, stand back, breathe a moment; he already had been. Asellus, Merlin, River, Ciel and Hope (mark ones), Freya, Trepkos, Miranda, Miata, Shirley, Heine, Rex, Bellatrix… and of course Sirius, James, and Harry. Sometimes to help strengthen powers, other times to channel, direct, or restrain them; to shake or to strengthen connection; all control, of varying kinds, with varying external effects, but always with some effect… and so far, he'd certainly had evidence to believe, positive.

Just because he finds himself in need of technique doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It's there for when you need it. Having this reminder of why it's so crucial can do nothing but revitalise the teaching… it has to, or his life… could never have unfolded the way it did.

And sometimes remembering history is good. How much does it suck that the rules never stay the same?

So, since it's too late to hide it—and profoundly dishonest to try—Lupin quickly does for Sam what he's been unable to do for himself: accept it. Move forward.

Yes, I'd agree with "crazy".

And I'd be happy to help you any way I can. It's something I'm always working on myself. Have been doing so all my life. We can work together.

Perhaps we should start by my seeing whatever it is you've got. Everybody's different, even when working with the same basic mechanics, which we're probably not. Is it something you can do on command?

No it's uh, it's something that happens when I'm really angry or anxious... [or scared] it's sort of... telekinesis from what I can tell so far.

[slight smile]

As I said… I'm working on it.

I'm familiar with telekinesis. Let's meet—as soon as you like—and I'll do a power reading on you. [Which sounds terribly like something to do with tarot cards, but… well, the man has gotten used to being teased about a time of the month, so what the hell.] If we can find a way for me to see your power in action, wonderful. If not, we can still start working.
